  • Engage: "Hook" into the lesson, activate prior knowledge, raise questions for investigation
  • Explore: Experience with experiments and investigation into the content and concepts
  • Explain: Learn scientific explanations of concepts, connections between investigations and scientific theories  ​
  • Elaborate: Use and apply concepts to new situations to gain a deeper understanding
  • Evaluate: Students show and reflection of understanding and learning

Uses of SIOP strategies in each lesson to promote the needs of ELLs

  • Daily Content and  Language Objective posted and reviewed
  • Unit Board for student reference of destination of unit
  • Leveled readings based on Lexile
  • Peer tutoring

  • Chucked instruction with hands on activities to reinforce new vocabulary
  • Use of direct instruction for confusing grammar and new words
    • Ex: Deposit/deposition/depositing pronunciation
